Tiffany Chan's Art History Survey

American painter Henry Asencio has emerged as one of the most intriguing young artists working today. His work blends the classical ideals of figurative painting with a unique style. Merging introspection and visual spectacle, Asencio's personal investigations of the figure, spirituality and abstraction possess the power to transform todays ideals of elegance and sensuality. Abstract expressionism or Abstract realism Asencio's work cannot be categorized by style or semantics.

'Smokers' (1920-25) by Dada artist Erwin Blumenfeld (1897-1969). This art movement is Dada. The main feature of Dada is an artistic and literary movement that began in 1916 in Zurich, Switzerland. It arose as a reaction to World War I, and the nationalism, and rationalism, which many thought had brought war about. This pin relates to the art movement because Dada was intended to provoke an emotional reaction from the viewer.

Art Nouveau: Night’s Rest (1899) Alphonse Mucha. Art Nouveau is a movement that modernized art, trying to escape the historical styles that was popular. Many artists drew inspiration from both organic and geometric forms, making elegant designs that flowed and had natural forms and more angular contours. This is a pin because it displays the flow popularized in the movement in the dress. The lady’s form is organic and has a very elegant feel. It has moved away from the historical styles.

Fauvism : Portrait of Henri Matisse (1905) Andre Derain Artist: André Derain. The artists chose vibrant colors and swirling and winding strokes in their art. The movement focuses on personal expression and by using strong colours to distinguish light and space. Finding more ways to communicate the artist's emotional state. This pin is fauvism, it has the simplified forms and is full of colours. There is a flatness to it but it is very united. The colours are used to elevate the piece.

Abstract Expressionism- Number 1 (1950) Artist: Jackson Pollock . It is the work of painters who paint using a range of colours and slashes of paint. It was abstract forms and expressionism. The piece were meant to display emotions and themes. The pieces mainly came from an individual's experience facing the post war era. This pin is a great example as it has the layering of colors with the violent movement from the artist. It is expressive of his emotions and builds up on the canvas.

Mandora (1909-1910)Georges Braque Cubism - Analytic Cubism lead to modern art's most extreme change from traditional representation. It removed perspective and realism. Choosing to represent the forms and space for bodies. The art allowed flow and space to blend the foreground to the background . This pin demonstrates cubism as it loses it dept perspection and becomes abstract. It doesn’t retain a form and space has filled and flood the page. There is organized chaos.

De Stijl: Composition A (1920) Artist: Piet Mondrian. This movement is about using one visual style to represent life in all aspects. Taking form geometric forms, artists using lines, squares and rectangles to express harmony. Painting with the primary colours and shades with exact precision. This pin follows exactly what the movements about, exact lines that create a piece. The squares and rectangle compose an image, art reduced in its simplest forms to convey their abstract message.

Dorothea Lange, Migrant Mother, 1936 American realism was a style in art, music and literature that depicted contemporary social realities and the lives and everyday activities of ordinary people. It was capture the moment This is a pin from American Realism because it is capturing a real mother facing the effects of the great depression. It was meant to display poorer areas of the country. She was an immigrant and she has become “ icon of resilience in the face of adversity.”

Lenin's Assassination Attempt - Vladmir Pchelin (1927) Movement- Soviet art. This movement initiated to put all arts to service of the dictatorship of the proletariat. This movement includes impressionism and cubism. This composition shows am attempt to assassin Lenin, a russian communist revolutionary, politician and political therapist. He led the Bolshevik Revolution and helped create the Soviet Union.

(Standing Wave) (1919-20) Naum Gabo Kinetic art - This is a movement about movement, creating innovative and interactive experience between the piece and its viewers. This went beyond the historical stiff art and introduced the idea of having motion and manipulating perspective with optical illusions. The standing wave is a pin because it incorporates all the movement was about, it was attached to a machine so it moved. At its speed that it moved it looked solid, an optical illusion.

This matches the movement with hard, solid red tones, contrasted by grey. It is very geometric and painted abstractly.

M-Maybe, c.1965, Roy Lichtenstein Pop's reintroduction of common imagery, with objects and people of everyday life, elevating pop culture to the fine art. By paintings mass culture objects and media stars, the Pop art movement blurred the fence between "high" art and "low" culture. The concept that art may be inspired from any source. This pin is a part of the movement because it simplifies a woman to basic colours, using the comic like stylings that is recognizable to the mass public.

Spiral Jetty (1970) Robert Smithson A movement manipulates natural landscape to make site-specific structures and art forms. Adding, to the mentality and simplicity of simple objects, the artists were drawn to the humble everyday materials The art is directly from nature using stones, water, and soil. This is a pin because Smithson uses bath salt to make a simple image, a spiral form. It was made and seen at the Great salt lake. This piece is one of the most recognized for movement.
