Star forming region
This is a compact star forming region located 2000 light years away in the constellation Cygnus (The Swan), known as Sh 2-106, or S106 for short.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣A newly-formed star called S106 IR is shrouded in dust at the center of the image, and is responsible for the surrounding gas cloud’s hourglass-like shape and the turbulence visible within. Light from glowing hydrogen is colored blue in this image.

Crab nebula
This image shows a composite view of the Crab nebula, an iconic supernova remnant in our Milky Way galaxy, as viewed by the Herschel Space Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope.

Orion Nebula
Orion Nebula in Oxygen, Hydrogen, and Sulfur. This image shows the nebula in three colors specifically emitted by hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur gas. The whole Orion Nebula cloud complex, which includes the Horsehead Nebula, will slowly disperse over the next 100,000 years.

Trifid Nebula
The beautiful Trifid Nebula is a cosmic study in colorful contrasts. Also known as M20, it lies about 5,000 light-years away toward the nebula rich constellation Sagittarius.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀A star forming region in the plane of our galaxy, the Trifid illustrates three different types of astronomical nebulae; red emission nebulae dominated by light emitted by hydrogen atoms, blue reflection nebulae produced by dust reflecting starlight, and dark nebulae where dense dust clouds appear in silhouette.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A dying star’s toxic legacy
The Westbrook Nebula — also known as PK166-06, CRL 618 and AFGL 618 — is a protoplanetary nebula.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The strange and irregular bundle of jets and clouds in this curious composite image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope is the result of a burst of activity late in the life of a star. As its core runs out of nuclear fuel, the star’s unstable outer layers are puffing out a toxic concoction of gases including carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide.⠀⠀⠀⠀

NGC 7129
Young suns still lie within dusty NGC 7129, some 3,000 light-years away toward the royal constellation Cepheus.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While these stars are at a relatively tender age, only a few million years old, it is likely that our own Sun formed in a similar stellar nursery some five billion years ago.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Most noticeable in the sharp image are the lovely bluish dust clouds that reflect the youthful starlight.

Stellar Nursery in Perseus
Stellar Nursery in Perseus.⁣NGC 1333 is seen in visible light as a reflection nebula, dominated by bluish hues characteristic of starlight reflected by interstellar dust. A mere 1,000 light-years distant toward the heroic constellation Perseus, it lies at the edge of a large, star-forming molecular cloud.

Orion Nebula
This image from NASA Spitzer Space Telescope shows the Orion nebula, our closest massive star-making factory, 1,450 light-years from Earth. The nebula is close enough to appear to the naked eye as a fuzzy star in the sword of the constellation.

The Lagoon nebula...
Gas and dust condense, beginning the process of creating new stars in this image of Messier 8, also known as the Lagoon Nebula. Located four to five thousand light-years away, in the constellation of Sagittarius (the Archer), the nebula is a giant interstellar cloud, one hundred light-years across.

The Keyhole Nebula in Eta Carinae
This is a region of the Keyhole Nebula in Eta Carinae (NGC3372)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The dark dusty Keyhole Nebula gets its name from its unusual shape. The looping Keyhole, in this featured classic image by the Hubble Space Telescope, is a smaller region inside the larger Carina Nebula.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Dramatic dark dust knots and complex features are sculpted by the winds and radiation of the Carina Nebula‘s many massive and energetic stars.
