Alison Bechdel: In a 1985 strip from Bechdel's long-running comic "Dykes to Watch Out For" one of her characters says she'll only watch a movie if it has at least two female characters in it, who talk to each other about something other than a man. This came to be called the "Bechdel test" -- use it as a quick check to evaluate whether a movie is really concerned with women's lives. (Needless to say, many popular movies still fail completely).
