William Steel was a young soldier of the 34th Illinois Infantry Co. F when he was shot 7 times at the Battle of Stone River, Dec. 31, 1862. All color guards and bearers of the flag were killed or wounded. Photographed here years later, three bullets remained in his body the rest of Steel's life.
