Alix, happy! I've never seen her so happily relaxed before up until this picture of her. It looks like Emperor Nicholas II is behind her, not too sure if that's him though.

Tsar Nicholas II of Russia recovering from Typhoid fever in 1901, taken in Livadia, Crimea. His illness had been an immense toll on his third daughter, Maria. The Grand Duchess was only two years old and she missed her father quite terribly. The little one was seen kissing a miniature portrait of her father, when the Tsar was down with the fever.

Alexandra is wearing the tiara from a sapphire parure made by Friedrich Koechli and given to her by Tsar Alexander III and Tsarina Marie Feodorovna. Intertwined scrolls in which 16 sapphires are set mounted in gold; the diamonds are mounted in silver and linked with gold.
