[node:summary]A story about the Gateway to Nations Pow Wow in New York City and hosted by the Redhawk Native American Arts Council.

Ivy Vainio was a senior in high school in Duluth, Minnesota when she attended her first pow wow, with her mother, a member of the Grand Portage Band of Oji

Native Americans dancing at a Powwow. The regalia she's wearing is for the "Jingle dance", a common dance among tribes. The jingles use to be made from bending the lids of chewing tobacco and sewing them on the dress. Originally, it was deer antler pieces. Now, there are a few manufacturers that make these. Much easier to sew on the dress with ribbons.

I want to participate in a Jingle Dance or another Native American dance during a Powwow

Erry day I'm Jinglin. Let me reassert that this wear is not appropriate for every body. This is powwow regalia - for Native Americans (real ones), people who are adopted by Native families, or are actively helping Native communities. Others need not apply.

Love the Traditional Jingle Dress, my Mom said she would hang on her Mom's in the closet & pull off her jingles.
