Traditional Sugar Cane When the author of the book "Sweetness and Power" was in the Caribbean, North American owned a vast majority of the land that was covered in sugar cane. Puerto Rico was not a major consumer of the sugar cane, but produced it for consumers in other places. Without these consumers, the huge quantities of land, labor and capital would not have gone into the sugar cane industry.
