The Dutch established a vegetable garden and corral for animals on Dejima. The stone sundial in this illustration was installed in the Dejima herb garden. Now preserved on Dejima by Nagasaki City, the sundial bears the inscription "HCK" probably referring to Herman Christiaan Kastens, director of the Dejima Dutch Trading Post from 1766 to 1767.
