In the Roman Empire trade routes were hard to manage. On land, trade routes would be a challenge because the Roman Army would need to send people to protect the wagons. On sea the routes criss-crossed to help avoid the risk of pirates. Ships would go from Roman cities to Spain, France, and Ostia. Ironically Ostia would be captured many years later on and be the downfall of the Roman Empire.
