Photos of an Aircraft Breaking sound barrier
This image shows a U.S. Air Force F/A-18 Hornet flying at "supersonic speed". This means the jet is flying upwards of 343 meters per second or "Mach 1" speed (the speed of sound). The white clouds around the jet are clouds of condensation. This is caused in the area behind the supersonic wave generated by the jet's speed due to extremely low pressure. These lines are perfectly defined because the waves follow the contour of the air craft.
