H.D. in Egypt, 1923~ H.D. (Hilda Doolittle) was primarily a poet who was present at the opening of King Tut’s tomb. The hieroglyphs and treasures of a world more ancient than Greece fascinated H.D., who turned repeatedly to Egypt as a symbol for the sacred, in works such as Palimpsest, “Pilate’s Wife,” Trilogy, and Helen in Egypt.

Rosemary Wordsworth Trevor-Bettye of Petersfield, England, a pioneering explorer of Egypt. Although Europeans had  ventured as far as Egypt in the 17th and 18th centuries, the country became more accessible to western travellers following the French invasion of 1798. Those touring the Mediterranean often made a detour to visit Cairo and the pyramids, with the first guide book to Egypt published in 1835.
