Manatees, Florida Photograph by Paul Nicklen, National Geographic

Manatees, Florida Propeller scars mark this manatee—graphic evidence of a too-close encounter with a boat. About one in four of Florida's 360 manatee deaths in 2012 resulted from collisions. Slow-speed zones help, but some boaters resent the restrictions.

Swim with a Manatee!!

I've been observing manatee for years; here's a photo of a manatee calf I called "Manny" from

Third Place. Manatee are often surrounded by bream, snapper and other enterprising fish at Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, Three Sisters Springs. It is unclear if the manatee ever receive any benefit from these associations, but most manatee can tolerate the fishes' attention for some time while basking in the warmth of the spring outflows. The camera used was a Nikon d300, housed in a Subal underwater housing with dome port, wide-angle fisheye zoom lens. By Carol Grant

Crystal River, Florida: In the Florida springs sunfish (bream) gather around a manatee to nibble.

"The endangered dugong is the only southern African sea cow. This ancient order (Sirenia) is distantly related to elephants and also includes the West African and tropical American manatees. Dugongs are slow-moving, entirely aquatic creatures of sheltered tropical waters, where they graze seagrass beds with the rising tide." www.bradtguides.com

Manatees have been known to body surf or “barrel roll” -- a fun maneuver where the animals spin round and round in a 360-degree motion -- just for kicks. The animals certainly swim as their primary form of locomotion, as they live exclusively in the water -- but they also enjoy playing around in the waves, because everyone needs to have a little fun.
