St. Martin De Porres was born in Lima, Peru, to a Spanish father and a freed slave mother from Panama. When he was 15, he became a servant in the Dominican Friary, doing many chores including being a barber and a farmer! He was very kind and compassionate to the poor and the sick. He also loved animals! Later he became a Lay Dominican Brother. He lived an austere life helping people of all races in Lima. He is the patron saint of mixed race people and barbers. His feast day is on 3 November.

St. Monica...my patron saint.  She is known as the patron saint of alcoholics (which I am not) but she was also the mother of St. Augustine (who let's just say was a challenging child/adult). I have traveled a similar path with one of my children. Her constant prayer and unconditional love for her child eventually brought him to the light of Christ.
