Now closed, Gray's was once the oldest general store in the US. I find general stores so inviting-- is it the trip down memory lane or entering a forgotten world?

Country Stores, you hardly see them anymore. For decades, country stores stood as compact yet quaint centers of commerce, ready to dispense most anything, and just as importantly, provide gathering places to socialize. In rural areas, they stood as beacons to anyone who needed a plug of tobacco, mule collar, most anything, especially a chance to talk. A trip to the “general store” never disappointed.

“Blessings be on this house,“ Granny said, perfunctorily. It was always a good opening remark for a witch. It concentrated people’s minds on what other things might be on this house.
