Once considered the best in the world, the French Army was dogged by infighting, political divisions, and poor morale and equipment. Even worse was its strategy of immobile defenses - the fabled and useless Maginot Line.
Foday Sankoh, 63, self-proclaimed liberator of Sierra Leone, is in jail awaiting trial for murder and mutilation (ordering his troops to hack off the limbs of civilians). He also smuggled diamonds to finance his 10-year rebellion against the government. The country's militia captured him in 2000.
