"I Have a Dream" Hexagonal Thinking Activity

Fun, interactive "I Have A Dream" writing and synthesis activity! This hexagonal thinking activity asks readers to use critical thinking skills to connect ideas, quotes, etc. in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. Hexagonal thinking is a retrieval and connection strategy. The goal is for students to make a generalization about linked ideas. Students are given (or self-generate) several relevant ideas, concepts, feelings, images, terms, etc., make connections, receive quick teacher feedback, and explainwhyandhow.
There is no right or wrong answer in this activity, so long as students are able to justify and explain their connections. You may want to increase the rigor by requiring textual citations to support these connections. You can also have students “re-shuffle” to find a new way of connecting the hexagons.
