Jacques Pepin - From humble beginnings, he became a chef to French Presidents, then came to America and instead of taking a job offer at the White House, decided to take a job with Howard Johnson's. In so doing, he is responsible for inventing the techniques that allow recipes to be consistently reproduced in multiple locations (father of the chain restaurant). His recipes are wonderful and his autobiography "The Apprentice" is an entertaining read. His enjoyable cooking shows air on PBS.
