Beaudouin’s Snake Eagle

It took a while to identify this Beaudouin's Snake Eagle, Circaetus beaudouini, partly because there are two principal field guides for The Gambia and it only appears in one of them. And guess which one we were endlessly poring over?

White-faced Whistling Duck

There were quite a few White-faced Whistling Ducks, Dendrocygna viduata, at the Kartong wetlands and, being quite large, relatively easy to get a half-decent shot at distance. These ducks breed in sub-Saharan Africa and much of South America.

Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird

Another first for me, a Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird, Pogoniulus chrysoconus. Although fairly common and very vocal, they tend to sing from cover and, as a result, are more likely to be heard than seen. This was the one and only time I saw one, as if to reinforce the point.

Quite big, noisy at times and easy to spot, it is always a pleasure to watch the Western Plantain-eater, Crinifer piscator. White Wings, West Africa, Beautiful Birds, Birds In Flight, Bald Eagle, Westerns, Animals, Animales, Animaux

Black-winged Red Bishops, Euplectes hordeaceus, were abundant during my November trip to The Gambia. Black Wings, Birds, Red, Bird

Black-winged Red Bishops

Black-winged Red Bishops, Euplectes hordeaceus, were abundant during my November trip to The Gambia. They are quite predictable, having regular or favourite perching spots and extremely predictable flying routes. This made it a bit easier (but by no means 'easy') to try and get some in-flight shots.
