"Francine BEIRACH was arrested during the Vel d'Hiv roundup with her parents, Avroum and Malka, who were deported on convoy 15 of August 5, 1942. However, there is no trace of Francine on the deportation lists where her name should have been. Perhaps she was one of those very young children, alone and in anguish and unable to state their identity when deported, for whom all means of identification were lost." During World War II more than 6 million Jews were killed in a genocide known as the Holocaust. Adolf Hitler, the leader of Germany and the Nazi Party, was bitterly anti-Semitic and blamed the Jews for Germany's problems. He developed the "Final Solution," a plan to isolate and kill the Jews. The Nazis sent Jewish prisoners to concentration camps throughout Europe. Some camps were killing centers; others were internment and forced-labor camps.
