In 2003, partial skeletons of nine individuals were discovered on the small Indonesian island of Flores. Scientists believe that they evolved from Homo erectus that came by boat and underwent island bound miniaturization, like other animal species, such as the pygmy elephant. Homo floresiensis (Hobbit) is thought to have survived on Flores at least until 12,000 years ago, making it the longest lasting non-modern human. It is believed that a volcanic eruption was responsible for their demise. Ancient Myths, Ancient Humans, Ancient Aliens, Ancient History, Homo Floresiensis, Religions Du Monde

Paleolithic Symbols: A ground-breaking study by Genevieve von Petzinger shows that dots, lines and other geometric signs found in prehistoric European caves may be the precursor to an ancient system of written communication dating back nearly 30,000 years. Von Petzinger and anthropology professor April Nowell compiled the markings from 146 different sites in Ice Age France, making it possible to compare the signs on a larger scale than had ever previously been attempted. The Homo heidelbergensis lived from about 700,000 yrs ago to 200,000 yrs ago. These were the first early humans to venture into the cold latitudes of Europe, were the first species to build shelters, and hunt big game animals with wooden spears. European populations of this species were the direct ancestors of the Homo neanderthalensis, NOT Homo sapiens. Homo Heidelbergensis, Prehistoric World, Prehistoric Animals

Folktales from the Indonesian island of Flores tell of a mysterious race of little people called the "Ebu Gogo," who abducted children and spoke in murmurs. Scientists began to take the myths more seriously when in 2003, the remains of a new humanoid species called Homo floresiensis was discovered in caves on the island. Fossil dating suggests that H. floresiensis may have lived alongside modern humans as recently as 12,000 years ago. First Humans, Cryptozoology

This photo depicts an assortment of hominid species, including most of the australopithecines and Homo ergaster (front left, facing camera). A neanderthal is at top right. The reconstructions (obviously, these are photos of the models) were produced by Wolfgang Schnaubelt and Nina Kieser in co-operation with GEO-magazine; an exhibition displaying the models opened in 1998 at the Landesmuseum, Darmstadt (Germany), which is where this photo was taken.
