大相撲で史上3位の優勝31回を誇り、昭和から平成にかけて一時代を築いた元横綱千代の富士の九重親方（本名=秋元貢=あきもと・みつぐ）が31日、膵臓（すいぞう）がんのため東京都内の病院で死去した。61歳だった。史上3位の優勝31回、国民栄誉賞も北海道福島町生まれ。1970年秋場所で初土俵を踏み、81年名古屋場所後に第58代横綱に昇進した。度重なる肩の脱臼などに耐えつつ、小兵ながら豪快な上手投げで土俵に君臨しファンを魅了。「ウルフ」「小さな大横綱」などと呼ばれた。
