Star Light, Star Bright

While we were studying outer space I introduced the overhead projector for the first time this school year. A family lent me the blue mesh to hang over the area and I used a frame from a pop up house to hold it away from the wall. The frame is just the right size for the children to go inside and open enough for a grown up to be involved. A few things we used were constellation pictures and mesh stars. Then I added coloured plexi-glass stars, coloured circles and stir sticks with see through…

Writing with light and shadows

On occasion, I like to pull out my overhead projector for the children to enjoy a little exploration of light and shadows. On this occasion, I invited the children to explore the overhead projector in a number of ways... To start out, I set up the

An Atmosphere for Creativity

According to psychologist Alan Bowd of Canada’s Lakehead University, children need to foster thinking skills such as these to encourage creativity: Fluency -- produce many responses to an open-ended question or problem. Flexibility -- generate unconventional ideas and view situations from different perspectives. Originality -- produce unique, unusual, or novel responses. Elaboration -- add rich detail to ideas. Visualization -- imagine and mentally manipulate images and ideas. Transformation…

On Display: Havergal College

Happy Friday Everyone! Today's "On Display" post features an interview with my dear colleagues from Havergal College. I have visited the Kindergarten program at Havergal twice, and left with my head filled with many questions and ideas to pursue in my own context. Some of their inspiration lead us to our "Beautiful Stuff" project, "The Best Part of Me" project, the Math Learning Carpet, and an overall improvement in our graphic design skills for our student portfolios and pedagogical…

Light and Shadow

We continue to play with light. Natural light streams into the studio each day hitting the mirrored disco balls hanging in the window. The walls, floors and ceilings sparkle with moving light. The children try to capture the flickering spots of light fascinated that they feel nothing. The overhead projector stimulates creativity each day by playing with shadows as well as placing different items on the projector itself. Comparing the blown up size of an object versus the actual object…

Shadow Puppets and Overhead Projector Excitement!

For a long time now I have been hoping to get an overhead projector for the school. My husband found out that they were recycling the ones at the school he works out, and low and behold he managed to save one for me from the recycling center. To say I was excited was an understatement! Thursday and Friday were spent exploring shadow puppets, projecting objects placed on the overhead projector, dancing, and story telling using props on the projector. When the objects are placed on the screen…
