A series of anti-marijuana propaganda films and books released in the 1930s helped fuel hysteria about cannabis.
Moloch of Marihuana
Comparing cannabis to various personifications of evil has always been an easy win for anti-cannabis campaigners, especially in the grip of the Reefer Madness era.
The movie Maryjane (1968) is directed by Maury Dexter and its cast includes Fabian Forte, Diane McBain, Kevin Coughlin and Patty McCormack (best known for her role as a child serial killer in 1956’s The Bad Seed).
John Wayne Marijuana
In "Big Jim McLain" (1952) John Wayne hunts down communists in Hawaii. The version released in Italy and Germany was retitled "Marijuana" and has John Wayne chasing drug smugglers instead of communists.
