Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz was a mexican nun and feminist poet who spent her entire life in the closed, authoritarian society that was colonial empire of New Spain. I have always admired her for being an independent spirit which was very unusual at that time, especially for a nun.

November 1651 – 17 April full name Juana Inés de Asbaje y Ramírez de Santillana, was a self-taught scholar and poet of the Baroque school, and nun of New Spain. She lived in a colonial era when Mexico was part of the Spanish Empire.

Juana Ines de la Cruz was feminist nun and an independent voice for the oppressed.  One of the most important poets in the Spanish Golden Age, de la Cruz wrote not only in the Spanish of the elite, but in the accented Spanish of African Slaves and the languages of indigenous America.  She dared to write feminist social critiques in the seventeenth century.  Her access to books was revoked by an angry church shortly before her death from the plague, but her work lives on.
