Every year on December 23, Mexican craftsmen descend upon Oaxaca's main zócalo to show off their radish-carving skills. Some past favorites at Noche de Rábanos include complete nativity scenes, Day of the Dead scenes, and even a radish version of painter Frida Kahlo. Oaxaca-Mexico ✿༺

While Americans have pumpkins for Halloween, Oaxacans have the radish for Christmas! The Night of the Radishes is one of the most anticipated celebrations in Oaxaca. Every year, the humble radish is carved into beautiful, intricate sculptures of animals, dancers, saints, conquerors, kings and everything else imaginable. Once Oaxaca's radish-artists are done with this vegetable, it barely resembles something you might eat at the dinner table.

Night of the Radishes, or Noche de Rábanos, is an annular celebration on December 23 where the people of Oaxca carve radishes for Christmas, like how Americans carve pumpkins for Halloween, and try to win contests with them.

Noche de Rabanos, or Night of the Radishes, is a tradition stretching back more than a century Merchants hoping to attract potential shoppers to the zócolo (town plaza) before and after Christmas church services would carve intricate shapes into the radishes’ ruby skin, sometimes forming little people or decorating the carving with other vegetables for sale. The festive radishes were a hit: locals bought the most intricate offerings for their Christmas centrepieces.

The Virgin of Soledad, Oaxaca's patron saint - radish style Tonight, 23 December, is a significant night for culture in Oaxaca, Mexico – it’s the Noche de Rabanos. The Night of the Radishes. Thousands of people descend into the zocalo to witness sculptures carved from extremely large radishes, especially grown for the occasion. It was certainly one of the most memorable Christmas exhibitions I’ve seen.
