This quick and simple activity is a powerful way to demonstrate the lasting and damaging effects of bullying to students. This activity generates deep, meaningful discussion in a class, and can easily be adapted for any grade or ability level.
Free: During this activity, I gave each student a heart to hold. I read the book Chrysanthemum out loud to them. Each time they heard a student in the story bullying and not using nice words they wrinkled the heart a little. At the end we tried to smooth out the heart.
Have student wrinkle up the paper heart (not tearing it) and then try to flatten it out. Discuss how words or actions can harm a heart and take time to heal. Good first week of school activity or for an anti-bullying activity.
