Pedro Berruguete (Spanish, ~ Virgin and Child ~ Pedro Berruguete was a Spanish painter; his art is regarded as a transitional style between gothic and Renaissance. Berruguete painted famous paintings of the Inquisition.

The great condottiere, Federigo di Montefeltro, duke of Urbino, had summoned Joos van Gent to decorate the library and study of his magnificent palace with allegories of the liberal arts and portraits of Biblical and pagan thinkers.

rt from Spain - Pedro Berruguete (Paredes de Nava, Palencia, 1450 - 1503), fue un pintor español, situado en la transición del estilo Gótico a la pintura renacentista. Tras su formación, con Fernando Gallego en Salamanca, habría viajado muy joven a Italia, donde trabajo bajo el mecenazgo del duque de Urbino. Fue padre de uno de los artistas más destacados del Renacimiento hispano, Alonso Berruguete. - Coronación de la Virgen, circa 1470.

Adoration of the Magi  -  Pedro Berruguete (1450-1504) Oil on panel, 350 x 206 cm Museo del Prado, Madrid  The two panels representing the Adoration of the Magi and the Two Wise Men belonged to the same altarpiece. Two other panels of the altarpiece representing Sts Peter and Paul are in the Valladolid museum.  The painting was executed after the Italian journey of the artist. The style is Renaissance in spite of the painted Gothic 'fake' framing.

The Tomb of Saint Peter Martyr Pedro Berruguete c. 1495 Oil on wood, 131 x 85 cm Museo del Prado, Madrid The panting belongs to a series of nine panels commissioned by High Inquisitor Torquemada for the St Thomas Church in Avila. The painting shows Italian, mainly Florentine influence.  St Peter Martyr was a Dominican monk and inquisitor in 13th century Verona who battled mercilessly the heretics. His tomb was the scene of a number of miracles and he was canonized in 1552.
