Quite unlike anything else in her canon, George Eliot published The Lifted Veil in 1859. The novella has become a great example of Victorian horror fiction, alongside great novels like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The text is narrated by the less-than-reliable Latimer who believes he has the ability to see into the future and read others’ thoughts. At the start of the novel, Latimer warns the reader that he has foreseen his own death.
