“Àlbum Meravella. Llibre de belleses naturals i artístiques de Catalunya” (Wonders album. Book of natural and artistic beauties of Catalonia), volum 5. 1933. 28 x 20 x 2,5 cm. Paper limp binding, with thin board covers and tight spine. Before (top half) and after (bottom half) the restoration process. The spine was converted to hollow spine, and the covers have been washed and mended. Book property of INSPAI Image Centre (Girona Provincial Council). Los lomos unidos son típicos de encuadernaciones muy antiguas en piel, códices de la edad media, y también de libros con encuadernaciones muy sencillas de hoy. La razón que antiguamente dejaran de hacerse estas estructuras fue precisamente porque la limitación de la flexibilidad por adición de refuerzos directamente sobre los pliegues de los cuadernillos conllevaba roturas. Los lomos unidos son típicos de encuadernaciones muy antiguas en piel, códices de la edad media, y también de libros con encuadernaciones muy sencillas de hoy. La razón que antiguamente dejaran de hacerse estas estructuras fue precisamente porque la limitación de la flexibilidad por adición de refuerzos directamente sobre los pliegues de los cuadernillos conllevaba roturas.
Los lomos fijos sufren mucho la tensión de apertura y cierre derivadas de una manipulación normal. En canvio en los lomos huecos esto no pasa porque en abrir y cerrar, el lomo se mantiene curvo hacia fuera mientras que las hojas se repliegan hacia dentro, ya que el material de cobertura no está encolado directamente sobre las hojas y deja un hueco (de aquí el nombre).
